Tree of life (3)

A lot of people seem eager to paint their name or initials on the Tree of Life in Bahrain. I was gratified to see that someone had already done that job for me in big red letters so I didn't have to get out my can of silver spray.

The 400-year-old Tree of Life has grown alone in the middle of the Bahraini desert with no visible source of water since before the Pilgrims went to America. The tree has even exceeded the normal life span of an acacia tree by 300 years. Temperatures where the tree lives can reach upward of 45C and rainfall is a few centimeters a year. When we drove up to the tree last weekend the temperature was in the low 40sC.
