Butterfly on valerianPosted by Michael Skorulski (Cigel, Slovakia) on 27 July 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio. The scent of wild valerian is irresistible to insects and people too. The roots are used to make a sedative. Valerian grows wild in Slovakia.

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaA beautiful capture Michael. I have one supplement that I take some nights when I can't sleep that has valerian in it. I wonder if this lovely butterfly will have a short snooze later. 27 Jul 2008 5:28am @Marion: Perhaps it was sedated enough to let me photograph it. Thanks, Marion. In Slovakia, they soak the root in alcohol to extract the sedative. Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, SpainVery good shot. So exceptional in fact I feel like that creepy flying thing is near me and I'm scared to death of them. I can face a snake before I can stand having something like this flying at me from any direction. Just thought I'd let you know I love the composition, but I have a really difficult time viewing flying creepy things:-) 28 Jul 2008 1:56am @sherri: Thanks for letting me know, Sherri. Not everyone likes insects. @Zygene: Merci, Zygene. Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanI feel this butterfly has too many eyes......just looking too much at me.....makes me shy!!! But....it is so beautiful and so much like a ballerina. Today I saw a huge black butterfly, at Kamakura, near the lotus pond...and I went round and round, turning, stopping, going again, stopping, waiting.......NO CHANCE to see IT stop its fluttering wings for one second!!!! I once said that butterflies in Japan are nervous creatures...and I do believe it! So.....I got me no butterfly!!! 28 Jul 2008 10:02am @Japanalia: Perhaps if there was a patch of valerian somewhere, they might be sedated into staying longer. A great comment, Gabriela. Carlos Palma from San Juan, Philippineslove the texture on the wings of the butterfly! awesome catch! trying to catch images of butterflies too! 28 Jul 2008 12:56pm @Carlos Palma: I wish you luck. thank you, Carlos.
