Slice of lifePosted by Michael Skorulski (Cigel, Slovakia) on 24 April 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. These palm branches in Saudi Arabia do their best to grow. Then somebody comes along with a sharp knife and slices them off. Not fair! Tomorrow we'll see the man who does the cutting.

Rags from Plano, United StatesI guess life's not fair. I can't wait to see the culprit! 24 Apr 2008 5:16am @Rags: Agreed. It can be unfair. Thanks, Rags. pLusOne from Cheonan, South Koreahmm wonder what is the use of the branches? do they make art craft or just for sale? 24 Apr 2008 5:30am @pLusOne: Thank you, P1. They just cut them because they think only a canopy of top branches looks better. The branches might be used to make a crude roof somewhere. Rhys from Darlington, United Kingdomwow, certainly not a tree to try and climb! nice shot. 24 Apr 2008 5:33am @Rhys: Agreed. Those barbs are sharp and hard. Thanks, Rhys. @mosleh: Thank you. Thank you, dpm. @isabel: Thank you, Isabel. Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaGorgeous compo Michael...are they being cut to help them grow? I'd love to know...it's beautiful! spikes and all... 24 Apr 2008 9:44am @Lorraine: Dpm from the Maldives says that they are cut simply to keep them looking a certain style and I think this is the case too. Thank you, Lorraine. Ina from Krugersdorp, South AfricaJust excellent - great closeup and fine detail. 24 Apr 2008 10:10am @Ina: Thank you, Ina. I appreciate that. Ron from Saint Louis, United StatesA well-chosen perspective, Michael ... excellent contrast throughout the shot! 24 Apr 2008 10:12am @Ron: Thank you, Ron. I appreciate that. António Pires from Lisbon, PortugalIf the palm could know that looks so beautiful in a picture, wouldn't mind having their branches cut off. 24 Apr 2008 10:38am @António Pires: Great comment. thank you. @Teresa Durães: Thank you, Teresa. @Alun Lambert: Many thanks, Alun. Viewfinder from Bradenton, United StatesNice pic. Down here in FL, they cut them because the lower branches grow yellow and unsightly. 24 Apr 2008 11:38am @Viewfinder: Perhaps that's the reason here then. Thank you, VF. Steven from Chicagoland, United StatesBeautiful composition and color. It was interesting to note the barbs. I've never seen that before. 24 Apr 2008 12:05pm @Steven: Thank you, Steven. I love the perspective...looking up at the nubs and then just a bit higher the more lucky branches that have escaped the hacking! Very well done. 24 Apr 2008 12:14pm @Tracey: Thanks so much, Tracey. MadScientist from Düsseldorf, GermanyI'm always wincing when I see single palm leaves for decoration at flower shops. Never liked this kind of treatment. Oswegan from Lake Oswego, United StatesNice image. I wonder why they slice them off? 25 Apr 2008 2:17pm Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanWell, there's a reason for cutting the branches! And, moreover, for trimming the stumps later on. Otherwise the palm trees would look in rags! 4 May 2008 2:14pm @Japanalia: You are right. Many thanks. |
