Weather-beaten - Lasqueti Island, CanadaPosted by Michael Skorulski (Cigel, Slovakia) on 16 February 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. You won't find a power line or telephone cable on Lasqueti Island off Vancouver Island. Residents have managed to fight these ugly intrusions and prefer to make all their own power through solar, micro-hydro or wind means. The island is overrun by small herds of shaggy wild sheep that long ago belonged to local farmers.

Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanWith just the photo and no other title or explanation...I'd have taken it to have been shot on coastal Japan!!!! The landscape is so similar, contorted trees included! And the trees make the shot, of course! 16 Feb 2008 5:19am @Japanalia: I agree about the trees. This is the Pacific Ocean too and perhaps has a similar geological history to Japan. Thank you, Gabriela. @Elisa: Thank you so much, Elisa. @MOHAMMAD: Thank you, Mohammad. Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, FranceVery nice landscape. Maybe I'd try to shoot from a downer place, just to put the tree on the sky. 16 Feb 2008 6:06am @Calusarus: Yes. that's a good idea. Thank you, Calusarus. dpm from malé, MaldivesScenery is absolutely beautiful 16 Feb 2008 6:26am @dpm: Thank you, dpm. martie from Okinawa, JapanSounds like my kind of place! It looks beautiful -- and I enjoyed the explanation. Good for the residents. They must have one of the "greenist" communities in the world! 16 Feb 2008 6:30am @martie: Thank you, Martie. Yes, it's a fascinating place but somewhat remote, taking about an hour by ferry. You can't take cars on the ferry either, which really helps the air quality as well. They have seminars from time to time on green living. Kaddy from Mumbai, Indialovely shot...I love the clarity of the photo and its depthness!! 16 Feb 2008 6:40am @Kaddy: That's a great comment. When I opened the shot I thought, it looks so much like home and it turns out that it is just a few miles away from where I live. Beautiful, wild untouched landscape. 16 Feb 2008 7:21am @Marion: Thanks, Marion. Yes, I loved that part of the island. It wouldn't be far away at all from Nanaimo. givethemhell from GermanyThis looks like paradise to me, no ugly intrusions of industrialization. Probably the people living there are kind and natural, too. 16 Feb 2008 7:54am @givethemhell: There is a real sense of community to protect the island. Thank you, gth. Seems we both had a calling for water today. Thanks for sharing! 16 Feb 2008 3:33pm @Steven: Thanks, Steven. That's a nice comment. vu@granby - Wolfgang Prigge from Granby, QC, CanadaI love this weather-beaten tree, I like to call this type "trees with character". Thank you. tyan from Singapore, Singaporewow, this is so beautiful its looks unreal.i love the silver surface of the lake and the distant horizon.Fantastic angle,i'd love to have a picnic here;) 16 Feb 2008 5:06pm @tyan: I know exactly what you mean. Thank you so much, Tyan. tyan from Singapore, Singaporethank you for taking time to reply my blog question.I pasted a reply here for your convenience, thanks again:) thank you for taking time to reply,Michael, that is nice. We are not so fortunate here. Women who take leav beyond 3 months usually get the sack.If they work in the civil service, they have a higher chance of taking longer leave but government policies are obviously silently disapproving stay home moms, such as higher subsidies to working moms, new on experts encouraging women to leave home, find work and leave their children at the childcare to boost the economy.Everything here is measured in dollars and cents.Perhaps it is inevitable.Somehow there is a stigma to moms staying home, and general disapproval.Perhaps it is because we are a country without rich natural resources and highly dependent on labour.Anyway, thanks for sharing. 16 Feb 2008 5:12pm @tyan: Thanks for letting me know, Tyan. It sounds like the system isn't good for moms. Steven from Montreal, CanadaGorgeous landscape! Those trees give you lots of options, awesome! 16 Feb 2008 5:14pm @Steven: Great comment. Thank you, Tracey. Ken McCoy from Orlando-Daytona Beach, FL, United StatesNice sharp images - interesting how the trees seem to be growing "into" the mountain, as if to protect or hide them. . 16 Feb 2008 6:42pm @Ken McCoy: That's a good observation and one to ponder. Thank you, Ken. @missparis: Je comprends. Ces Iles de Golfe en Colombie Britannique sont particulièrement intéressantes. Merci du commentaire. Viewfinder from Bradenton, United StatesWhat a wise decision has been made by the people of the island; this must be it's own kind of paradise, as your beautiful capture of it indicates. 16 Feb 2008 7:45pm @Viewfinder: Thank you, VF.
