Cortina d'Ampezzo, ItalyPosted by Michael Skorulski (Cigel, Slovakia) on 19 January 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. The Italian ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomite Alps was comatose when I arrived for some early-season snowboarding. It suddenly burst into life for a street festival. This is the first in a 7-photo series.

Calusarus from ST SORLIN EN VALLOIRE, FranceNo snow in Cortina at this moment ? Bad luck for this ski resort. 19 Jan 2008 7:04am @Calusarus: Yes, there was very little when I was there too. Here in Slovakia we're getting rain so even the artificial snow is melting. martie from JapanBeautiful! The snow on the mountain is beautiful -- and I love how those evergreens in the foreground are so fresh looking. Can't wait to see the rest of this series, Michael! 19 Jan 2008 8:14am @martie: Your comment is very kind. Thanks, Martie. Zsolt from Budapest, Hungaryohh what a great place. I love places just right beside a mountain. There was no snow in the town but higher up, a couple of lifts were working. So I got in some boarding. It just cost me a lot to take a taxi to the slopes because the free ski bus wasn't running yet. @Daroru: Thanks, Daroru. @Zahra: Thank you, Zahra. You are very kind. @Jhani: Thanks, Jhani. Frankie from Boxmeer, Netherlandsbeautiful colors and composition. nice shot Michael. 20 Jan 2008 1:01am @Frankie: Thanks so much, Frankie. amy from Rocky Mountain House, CanadaBeautifully composed, Michael!! Gorgeous image! So how do the Dolomites compare to our Rockies? I was sat by a man on a plane who said he'd travelled to every continent and thought the Rockies were the most stunning mountains. Always, wondered if he was just trying a line on me or truly meant it... ;-) 20 Jan 2008 1:24am @amy: The Rockies are higher so more dramatic and amazing. The Dolomites can have a pink tinge and limestone outcroppings so are also very beautiful in their own right. But on a smaller scale. Kristen Piece from Brooklyn, United Stateslooks like a dreamscape. love it. 20 Jan 2008 4:06am @Kristen Piece: Thank you, Kristen. A kind comment. Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanWe should all talk to Lorraine and go visit to Canada....she has more snow there than she can handle! (We haven't seen any snow here around Tokyo-Yokohama this winter!) This resort is beautiful in all weathers....too bad for the skiers this season! 20 Jan 2008 8:42am @Japanalia: You're right. Thanks, Gabriela. dailyphotosofmalé from malé, MaldivesI am sure this is only a reminder of the breath taking view you enjoyed 20 Jan 2008 9:01am @dailyphotosofmalé: Quite right. The camera only sees a small part of what the eyes and brain absorb. As my daughter once said, wouldn't it be nice if there was a camera where you just blinked your eyes, and it recorded exactly what you saw and felt. Thanks for visiting. dee from Innsbruck, AustriaAh, the Dolomites ... not that far away from Innsbruck. Very well composed shot with an interesting picture format! 20 Jan 2008 10:50am @dee: Thank you for the nice comment, Dee. @Teresa: Thanks, Teresa. @Oswegan: Many thanks, Oswegan. @alla: Dreams are the first step toward reality.
