Illuci from Hurdegaryp, NetherlandsHappy New Year, Michael, and let all warriors soon be existent only as statues :) 2 Jan 2008 10:28am @Illuci: Happy New Year to you. That is an interesting sentiment you mention. I wonder if it will ever be true. Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaPowerful and magnificent, such history to architecture, it touches me. Love the colours too :) oh and I'll second Illuci on the sentiment 2 Jan 2008 11:15am @Lorraine: Thanks, Lorraine. As a Canadian living in Slovakia, I find the architecture a constant source of delight and interest. The old town of Bratislava has gone through extreme renovation in the 20 years since the fall of communism. The communists used to tear down such buildings and put up concrete cereal boxes. A huge proportion of the historic old town was demolished to make way for the access road to a bridge across the Danube. Laurent from Lyon, Francebeautiful frontage I like the baroc. 2 Jan 2008 12:12pm @Laurent: Many thanks, Laurent. The old town of Bratislava is indeed very beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. Steven from Montreal, CanadaWow, Bratislava looks beautiful! How does it compare to Prague (I was there this summer)? 2 Jan 2008 5:25pm @Steven: The old town of Bratislava is a much smaller version of the old part of Prague. I have only included here those parts of the old town that I found beautiful. Bratislava, like most former communist cities, has very ugly parts: boxy rundown apartment blocks, bunker-like government buildings, the remains of smokestack industries , tangles of electric cable overhead. Very gradually everything is improving. @badala: Thank you kindly for your remark. @Brites: Thank you very much for your kind comment. @Walt: Thanks, Walt. A positive comment is always appreciated. Japanalia from Yokohama, JapanI visited some towns of former Czechoslovakia in 1979, among them Bratislava, too. Though under a communist regime at that time, I was impressed by the beauty of its monuments and especially churches! A great thing to read that the old monuments are being restored with such dedication!A beautiful image that pleases the eye! 5 Jan 2008 7:18am |
